Government Sex Education has always sparked heated debates. And the liberal trajectory that government school sex ed seems to be going down has many parents concerned. On Monday April 23rd many parents in Calgary, Vancouver, Victoria in Canada, Garden Grove, Sacramento in California, London in the United Kingdom, Evansville, Indianapolis, Bloomington in Indiana, Decorah in Iowa, Charlotte in North Carolina, Akron in Ohio, Austin, San Antonio in Texas, Mulgrave in Australia and Martinsburg in West Virginia participated in a “Sex Ed Sit Out” to protest inappropriate sexual education. Parents kept their children home for the day.
Some of the most contentious aspects of the various sex education curriculums include instruction of oral sex, anal sex and masturbation. Other problematic parts include teaching children about gender fluidity and glorifying premarital sexual activity.
Many parents are quite understandably upset. Other parents are supportive of the curriculum and few may even wish it went farther. Social conservatives advocate for abstinence-only education and believe that children should not learn the intricacies of intercourse. I worry about the efficacy of abstinence-only education though. Many studies have shown that rates of teen pregnancy are higher in places with abstinence-only education but I wonder if that is correlation or causation. Religious people believe that pre-marital sex, anal sex and masturbation are sins. Liberals believe that children should learn about these things and have the capacity to make these decisions.
The one thing that everybody can agree on is that there is a wide range of what parents want their child’s sexual education to be. And they should have the right to decide what kind of sexual education their children receive. Parents raise their children with the values they deem important and those values ought to be reflected in their child’s sexual education. Instead what is happening is children in liberal regions are getting left-wing sexual education with values that some parents find abhorrent.
I remember when my province, Ontario got a left wing sexual education curriculum. I protested wildly with tens of thousands of angry parents from diverse backgrounds, races, religions and economic situations. But our cries fell on deaf ears, the curriculum was implemented September 2015. First graders learn what vulvas and testicles are and third graders learn about “six genders”. Sixth graders learn about the intricacies of masturbation, anal sex and oral sex and eighth graders make “sex plans”. I believe this material is age inappropriate and many parents agree.
It is heartening to see a grassroots effort from other parents around the world to stop inappropriate sex education. My hope is there will be a movement to leave sex education, a deeply personal matter, to the parents. This movement can only come from us, the grassroots.
